Bow and Crossbows

Item Cost Weight Description
Bow, long 10 to 100 sp 1 - 2 kg A tall straight bow made from a single piece of wood. The exact cost and weight varies based on the quality of the bow, the type of wood used and the draw weight. A long bow with a high draw weight aay be referred to as a "war bow", "great bow" or "strong bow".
Bow, composite recurve 1,200 - 1,800 sp 1 - 1.5 kg A composite recurve bow (made of multiple materials and featuring recurved limbs). Typically smaller than a long bow, but has greater range and damage. However, it is more difficult to craft, much more expensive and is more fragile than a long bow. Again, cost and weight vary based on quality, wood and draw weight.
Crossbow, light 300 sp 2 kg This is a small crossbow with simple wooden limbs. The light crossbow can be reloaded one of three ways – drawing the string back with one hand, using the stirrup or using a goat’s foot lever. The method used and time it takes to reload depends on the strength and skill of the crossbowman.
Crossbow, medium 600 sp 4 kg The medium crossbow has composite recurve wooden limbs and a built-in foot stirrup at the nose. It can be reloaded one of two ways – either using the stirrup or using a goat’s foot lever. The method used and time it takes to reload depends on the strength and skill of the crossbowman.
Crossbow, heavy 1,200 sp 6 kg This is a Kalimuran built crossbow with steel limbs and a very high draw weight (typically 600 kg). It cannot be reloaded using strength alone. It requires a cranequin or windlass and between 30 to 90 seconds to reload depending on the skill of the crossbowman.
Crossbow, great 3,000 sp 24 kg This enormous crossbow is built and used by the ogres. It is typically too large and heavy for most characters to use. It is built with composite limbs and a very high draw weight (typically 600 kg). It achieves its high damage with larger limbs, a longer span and by launching a very large bolt (twice the normal and typically 500 grams). It can only be spanned with an oversized goat’s foot lever specially made for a crossbow of this size. In addition, it requires long arms and a great deal of strength. If one has sufficient, size, strength and skill, this crossbow can be spanned and loaded surprisingly quickly allowing a shot every 10-15 seconds. This crossbow is roughly double the size and six times the weight of a standard heavy crossbow.
Crossbow, double 2,000 sp 7 kg This is a special variant of the medium crossbow. It has two sets of limbs and two strings layered one on top of the other. It has two separate triggers. This allows it to fire two bolts before it needs to be reloaded. It is reloaded the same as a medium crossbow. Each string must be spanned separately therefore it takes twice as long to reload as a medium crossbow. Furthermore, only the top string can be drawn with a goat’s foot lever. The bottom string must be drawn using the stirrup.
Crossbow, repeating 3,000 sp 4 kg This unusual crossbow has an integrated magazine. Within is a complex mechanism that spans the string and drops a bolt into place all in one action. The mechanism is activated with a level. Due to the rapid lever action, it can be fired very rapidly - about once every 5-6 seconds. The drawback is that the weapon has very limited range and very low damage. This weapon is of Kalimuran design and is only available in Kalimura. This magazine stores ten bolts. Once the ten bolts are depleted, the weapon must be partially disassembled to reload it, which takes 3 minutes.
Crossbow, latchet 5,000 sp 4 kg This marvel of engineering is essentially a medium crossbow with a built-in spanning lever and complex internal gear system which automatically spans the string. This greatly increases the reloading speed of the weapon. It is very similar to the medium crossbow (thick wood or horn limbs and moderate draw weight). A modest amount of strength is required to span this crossbow with the built-in lever. With sufficient skill and practice, it is possible to loose a bolt evey 5 seconds. Due to the complex engineering of this crossbow, it is only available in Kalimura and is quite expensive. It’s mechanism is somewhat fragile and this weapon suffers a -4 on any saving throw.

Other Missile Weapons

Item Cost Weight Description
Atlatl 1 sp 1 kg Also known as a "spear throwe", this weapon is a short wooden shaft with a cup at one end. It often includes a leather thong to wrap the wrist. This device is used to throw spears, javelins and darts with greater range and force. When using a spear thrower, the range and damage of the projectile are doubled.
Blowgun 2 sp 1 kg A simple and primitive weapon consisting of a small tube for firing light projectiles and darts.
Bola 3 sp 1 kg A thrown weapon consisting of heavy balls connected by a strong cord. On a hit with a limb (or head), it will wrap around the limb hampering use of the limb. On a particularly good hit, it will entangle two limbs together.
Javelin 4 sp 1.3 kg A 2.5 meter long slender stave with a sharp metal tip. Designed to be thrown.
Skybow, Avarian 85 sp 3 kg A specialized type of bow designed to be fired by an avarian's feet. Designed to be fired from flight.
Sling 0.5 sp .1 kg A leather loop used to throw simple rocks or leaden sling bullets.
Spear 7 sp 3 kg A 3 meter long shaft with a bladed head. Longer and heavier than the javelin. The spear can be thrown or used as a melee weapon.
Staff Sling 2 sp 2 kg A wooden staff with a rope and leather thong attached at one end. Designed for hurling stones with great force.
Throwing Axe 15 sp .1 kg A small one-handed axe designed for throwing.
Throwing Knife 3 sp .5 kg A small balanced knife designed for throwing.
War Dart 5 sp 1 kg Also known as a dart, military dart or pilum. A smaller, lighter variation of the javelin with fletching. Can be thrown by hand or with a spear thrower. Has improved flight characteristics, but reduced range and damage.

Ammunition

A sheaf is a bundle of 24 arrows. All prices are for a sheaf of arrows or arrowheads unless otherwise stated.

Item Cost Description
Arrow, War 50 sp The war arrow is a heavier arrow (typically 80-100 grams each). War arrows are thick and longer than flight arrows. They also have longer and larger fletching. War arrows are the standard type of arrows that a soldier or adventurer would carry into battle. Due to their weight, they do more damage. They can be fitted with any of the arrowhead types listed below.
Arrow, Flight 30 sp The flight arrow is the “common” arrow often used for hunting and target practice. It weights about 40-50 grams. Like war arrows, flight arrows can be fitted with a variety of types of arrowheads (see below). Flight arrows do less damage than, but fly further than, war arrows due to their lighter weight.
Arrowhead, Broadhead 2 sp / sheaf Standard arrow with a typical broad head bladed tip. Suitable for hunting and war.
Arrowhead, Bodkin 4 sp / sheaf Simple metal spike tipped arrow that excels at penetrating armor.
Arrowhead, Needle Bodkin 4 sp / sheaf A narrow type of bodkin arrow designed to penetrate chainmail armor specifically.
Arrowhead, Platecutter 4 sp/sheaf A shorter version of the bodkin designed to punch through rigid armor. Due to the shape of the head, It is better at "biting" armor and less likely to be deflected by a smooth, hard surface.
Arrowhead, Forkhead 4 sp / sheaf A wide, forked metal head either in a V-shape or a crescent moon shape. This arrowhead can be used to hunt birds (it will not ski off the feathers and can clip a neck or wing). It's also very good for cutting ropes, ship rigging and ripping holes in sails. This arrowhead does not do well against armor.
Arrowhead, Barbed Broadhead 4 sp / sheaf A broadhead arrow tip with barbs. This is specifically designed for war. Due to the weight and size of the head, it reduces range and accuracy slightly, but delivers vicious wounds. Furthermore, it does additional damage if yanked out on the battle field. If left in, it can cause other problems. It can be removed safely by someone with healing skill.
Arrowhead, Swallowtail 6 sp / sheaf A large, curved barbed broad-headed arrow. Reduced range and accuracy, but increased damage. Designed for hunting large game animals. Will not penetrate armor, but on a successful hit, causes bleeding.
Arrowhead, Burst 10 sp ea This is a very specialized type of arrow tip that consists of a small glass sphere that can filled with any liquid. The arrow head shatters on impact and splashes the liquid on the target. It is a single use weapon. Due to the difficulty in manufacture, this arrowhead is quite expensive and costs 10 silver pieces for each arrow tip.
Arrowhead, Firehead 3 sp ea A special arrow tip of twisted wires forming a small cage. The arrow head can be stuffed with an oil soaked rag which is ignited before shooting. Firehead arrow tips are difficult to craft and therefore cost 3 silver pieces each
Arrowhead, Grappling 1 sp ea This arrow head is essentially a small grappling hook of good steel. It is very heavy and adds 0.5 kg to the weight of the arrow. The arrow will have terrible flight characteristics and range is one fifth normal. Such an arrow is designed to carry one end of very light rope with it and hook onto something as an anchor. Can be used to scale walls and such. If shot at a target at close range, it hits hard and delivers blunt damage rather than pierce.
Bolt, light 1 sp/doz A light weight bolt designed to be used by a light crossbow.
Bolt, medium 2 sp/doz A medium weight bolt designed to be used by a medium crossbow.
Bolt, heavy 4 sp/doz A heavy weight bolt designed to be used by a heavy crossbow.
Dart, Blowgun 1 sp A small feathered projectile. Does very little damage, but can deliver poisons to target.
Slingbullet, stone 1 sp/100 A smooth round stone. Perfect for use in a sling. One hundred of them cost a silver.
Slingbullet, lead 1 sp/10 A smooth round sphere of lead. Specifically made for a sling. Ten of them cost a silver.

Accessories

Item Cost Weight Description
Bowstring 0.5 sp 0.01 kg Standard arrow with a typical broad head bladed tip. Suitable for hunting and war.
Quiver 1 sp 0.3 kg Standard quiver. Stores one dozen arrows.
Scabbard 3 sp 0.2 kg Scabbards come in all shapes and sizes. Price can range from a single silver piece to several dozen gold pieces for a large and highly decorative armored scabbard. The average cost is 3 sp for a plain and unadorned leather scabbard that fits a typical long sword. Weight for such a scabbard would be about 1 kg.
Goat's Foot Leve 4 sp .5 kg Also known as a spanning lever. This curved metal device attaches to a crossbow and allows the crossbow string to be drawn back more easily, requiring very little strength. The goat’s foot lever was an early invention of Kalimura and has spread to many other nations. It is now commonly used by crossbowmen of every nation.
Windlass 10 sp 2 kg A small rope and pulley system that is attached to a heavy crossbow to crank back the string and cock it. It takes about 25-90 seconds to cock a heavy crossbow using a windlass, depending on skill level. The windlass requires two hands to attach and crank it. This device is available only in Kalimura.
Cranequin 40 sp 1 kg A device consisting of winch, rope and handle that is attached to a heavy crossbow to crank back the string and cock it. It takes about 20-50 seconds to cock a heavy crossbow using a cranequin, depending on skill level. The cranequin has several advantages over the windlass: it can span the heaviest draw weight crossbows, it’s faster to use and it only takes one hand to crank it. It is, however, much more expensive. This device is available only in Kalimura.
